My Full Circle Order – Week of May 15th “Summertime Soon”
It’s easy these days to despair. Each sunny day a gift from the heavens, each rainy, dark day a curse. Such is the bi-polar living of the Northwest. And though I’ve often championed grilling as my personal Xanax, in these wicked days even my generally soft edges are becoming frayed.
It’s this time of year that eating fresh, seasonal foods is both a blessing and a wish. The changing palate, both bringing much needed vitamins and nutrients to bolster our spirits as well as a glimpse of warmer times to come. Akin to time travel, we can look into our Full Circle order and see the warmth on the horizon as our southern partners bring us the beginning of summer flavors.
When I see corn in my box, it’s silken tassels dusting my other delicious items, I immediately think of my grill, and warm summer air, and the hope of a weekend sun to bring it all together. Each meal brings me further from the rain and cold of winter and closer to swimming in Lake Washington, barbecuing late into the night and dozing in hammocks.
My default order for next week:
Baby Bok Choy
White Sweet Corn
Red Leaf Lettuce
That being said, I can’t believe we’re seeing sweet corn in the box already. I feel like we’ve barely stepped over the doorstep into spring’s gentle, if sodden welcome and now summer is hurrying up behind us. Not that I’m complaining, I just haven’t had enough asparagus, snap peas, fava beans and green garlic to be moving on so quickly to the grilling days of summer.
I guess that means a grilled corn salad is in order. Either that or corn salsa. My jalapeno pickled carrots are almost tender and given that red radishes are in the box, a southwest themed dinner seems unavoidable. Grilled onions, thin strips of sirloin, corn salsa and some grilled zucchini seems an inevitable end to this box.
Everything else but the apples is staying as well, oranges, avocados and strawberries are all easily consumable and enjoyable treats in these fleeting sunny spring days. I may have to trade out the apples for a couple green bell peppers to complete my grilling agenda.
So here’s hoping for more warmth, a little more sun and more summer flavors to come. Check back next week for Corn Salsa and the grilling agenda. Eat well, be happy.
