Full Circle donates to McGrath Bike-a-thon
Good Morning to my favorite farmers! begins the email we received in April 2016. Originating from the small Alaskan village of McGrath, Amanda Bybee was reaching out to ask for our assistance in feeding participants in the school’s annual Bike-a-thon. Healthy organic eating is a cornerstone of Full Circle’s mission and we jumped at the opportunity to help out with such a great event.
With a population of about 350, McGrath sits on the banks of the Kuskokwim River in Central Alaska. The rural village is not on the road system and the only access in or out is by air–which can be costly. While some children are taught at home by their parents, the K-12 McGrath Public School educates about 52 students with three full-time teachers. These students work extremely hard to raise money for extracurricular activities like basketball, Native Youth Olympics, volleyball and government trips–and funding higher education can be difficult. Enter the Carol Dietrich Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Carol Dietrich Memorial Scholarship Fund benefits local graduating seniors who are continuing on to pursue higher education. One of the main fundraisers for this fund is the annual Walk/Bike-a-thon coordinated by the McGrath School. Parents and children ride their bikes (or walk) ten miles–five miles out of town and five miles back into town–and raise money from pledges from the community. Local businesses–like Full Circle–and organizations help run checkpoints along the way and supply drinks and snacks for the participants.
Full Circle Donates
Once the logistics were established–McGrath is a Full Circle site delivery location, and we already had air cargo heading that direction–we worked with Amanda to ship some special treats. On the day of the event, participants enjoyed:
- Organic Mixed Cherry Tomatoes
- Organic Mangos
- Organic Gala Apples
- Organic Bananas
- Organic D’Anjou Pears
- Organic Yellow Bell Peppers
All of the leftovers were sent to community elders and families with small children.
