Full Circle Faces: Doug Langum, Full Circle Farm General Manager
What brought you to Full Circle?
I was recruited for this position, and align myself with the local aspect. Being able to get farm grown items into consumer’s hands faster, equates to a better tasting product with greater nutritional value. We all want good taste versus bland, and by getting that right we’ll be able make significant contributions. Right now this farm supplies the Pacific Northwest, but I believe it has the ability to become the McDonalds of Organic Food.
How does Full Circle’s Mission speak to you?
I come from the industrial food system and know that high fructose corn syrup is present because it meets a demand from the American consumer. It gives people the taste they want. I am that consumer, but when given a choice between a great peach or a candy bar, a great melon or a donut I make the better choice. Providing a great tasting product is where we can make a difference and change people’s diets.
Well, I’m a farmer so don’t have much time for outside interests. When not working at Full Circle, I go to the family ranch in central California where I grew up, or to my brother’s dairy farm in Oregon. Here it’s sometimes stressful, with budgets and deadlines, but free time farming is just fun and the only recreation I seem to fit in.
Favorite food memory?
I grew up on a ranch with garden and fruit trees, and it has to be that access to fresh fruit. As kids, we learned to look for the fruit with insect bites, since those were the sweetest. But I think my all time favorite memory is hauling watermelon up to the porch and sitting there with a knife carving and eating my fill.
Favorite Full Circle grown item?
Kale and Broccoli. I make my kale chips with a bit of garlic salt, and like to stem broccoli, adding only a little EVOO.
I just reread Sugar Nation which interests me in that genre of Foods that Heal.
Sweets and Ice cream. I’ve been known to have just ice cream for dinner.
Goals for Full Circle?
To build a stable, replicable farming system that produces year after year, and to be able to export the knowledge to increase the footprint of Organics.
