Grower Profile: Ferrari Farms
When we’re searching for some of the niche items to fill out our holiday offerings we keep a couple things in mind. First we look for exceptional quality and flavor, and second we look for sustainable farming practices, above and beyond the already stringent organic certification process.
When searching for organic nut growers Ferrari farms was first on our list. Ferrari Farms operates on a 300-acre, family owned and operated farm, specializing in simply the finest, certified organically grown fruits and nuts. Located in the heart of California in the San Joaquin Valley with rich, deep class I soils, where warm days are cooled by evening delta breezes, they have been growing crops organically for over 25 years now, and have been certified by CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) for over 18 years.
Their commitment to organic farming runs deep. Ferrari Farms was one of the early pioneers in the organic industry, growing produce organically long before it became fashionable. Wayne and his father, George (Grandpa), started farming together back in 1963, and it’s been a family operation ever since (although they did let Grandma retire from active duty at the packing shed when she hit 78!).
Today, Wayne and his wife, Irene, continue to farm with their two sons, Jeff and Greg. As a family operation, they take great pride in what they grow. They use a variety of methods to increase their sustainability including a lot of compost, manual weeding, natural pest controls like predator mites and ladybugs, an owl house and even a few bat houses to help keep down invasive and destructive insects.
Their goal is that every peach, nectarine, apple, apricot, plum, pluot, cherry, and walnut to be the best one you’ve ever tasted. And doing that organically takes a bit more effort than just spraying everything with poisonous herbacides, but they go the extra mile because they take pride in the quality and sustainability of their farm and their products. After all, it’s their name on the box.
