Behind the Food: Alvarez Farms
Full Circle works with the best farmers, ranchers and artisan producers in the industry to source only top-quality organic produce and other all-natural foods for our members. This week, we’re taking a deeper look at a Washington-based farm that specializes in organic peppers.
A descendant of a long line of farmers, Don Hilario Alvarez spent years as a laborer on local farms and eventually worked his way up to foreman, investing in land along the way. In 1981, he founded Alvarez Farms in the Yakima Valley of Washington State.
Hilario began employing organic growing practices in 1991 to provide a better, healthier life for his family, his employees and his customers. Today, biodiversity is alive and well at the farm, which now spans 80 acres and produces more than 300 varieties of vegetables, including more than 200 varieties of peppers, more than a dozen summer squash varieties and almost two dozen eggplant varieties.
The Alvarez Team
Hilario works side-by-side with his children to operate the farm, the wholesale program and their many farmers market stalls. His eldest son, Eddie, manages the farm, and his youngest son, Steve, manages the wholesale and marketing programs.
Alvarez Farms and Full Circle
One of the first organic farms in Washington started by a Mexican immigrant, Alvarez Farms is now also one of the largest, but it still maintains its humble, family-focused roots. Hilario is proud to partner with his longtime friends at Full Circle to provide the freshest, highest quality organic produce.
