Viviva started in a med school dorm room in 2017. Aditya was taking in a lot, from new knowledge to new friends, but he was not creating anything. He had painted since he was a kid, although it wasn't polished. He and his brother, Rohan, set out to make watercolors easy enough to use that people would pick up a brush again. The idea came from a medical technique that uses a similar process. They named the brand for their grandmother, whose initials are Vi Vi Va.

Since 2023, Viviva has been led by an all-women team. The watercolors are handcrafted by local women artisans. The brand focuses on creativity, fun, and mindfulness, and the paints are made to fit into a busy day, at a cafe or on a long flight.
