All-Natural Egg Dye

We kind of couldn't believe how amazing these eggs turned out, using ingredients found in our box -- and dinner table! (For more step-by-step instructions, check out our blog).

SERVING SIZE

makes 1 dozen eggs

INGREDIENTS

1 dozen hard boiled eggs (brown or white)

4 cups red beets, chopped (red/pink)

4 cups yellow onion skin (orange)

3 tablespoons turmeric, grated (yellow)

4 cups red cabbage, chopped (blue)

1 quart black coffee, brewed extra strong (brown)

INSTRUCTIONS

Choose one color/ingredient (or more!). Place the ingredients in a pot using the amount listed. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar (white, apple cider, any kind) and 1 quart of water to a pot. Add additional water if the ingredients are not sufficiently covered.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Let the ingredients simmer for 30 minutes. Strain the dye and put it into a bowl. Wait for the mixture to become room temperature before you begin to dye your eggs.

Natural dyes do require a little more patience than the grocery store dye kits. We dyed our eggs for 5 minutes, which results in a light color and 4 hours, which gives a rich and saturated color. So it really just depends on your time, patience and determination! Note: After dyeing your eggs, carefully remove them and let them sit to dry - do not wash or rinse.
